Halāl and Harām

Praise be to Allāh (ﷻ), the Lord of the World; and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and upon all his Family and Companions.

As-salāmū’alaykum

Rabbi shraḥ lī ṣadrī wa-yassir lī ʾamrī wa-ḥlul ʿuqdatan min lisānī yafqahū qawlī
(My lord! relieve my mind  And ease my task And loose a knot from my tongue that they may understand my saying.) – Sūrah Ṭā Hā 20 :25-28

Here, in this post, i am stating a common mistake which many muslims of the new generation is making these days. I observe a lot of muslims due to their religious ignorance, eat chicken or mutton which are served to them without inquiring, whether they are slaughtered in the name of Allāh (ﷻ) or not (Zabaḥ). Eating anything which is not slaughtered in the name of Allāh (ﷻ) is ḥarām and is a big sin in Islām.

It has been clearly stated in Al-Qur’ān, what is forbideen and what is not.

yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū ʾawfū bi-l-ʿuqūdi ʾuḥillat lakum bahīmatu l-ʾanʿāmi ʾillā mā yutlā ʿalaykum ghayra muḥillī ṣ-ṣaydi wa-ʾantum ḥurumun ʾinna llāha yaḥkumu mā yurīdu” ~ Sūrah Al – Ma’idāh 5:1

(O you who have believed! Keep your agreements. You are permitted animals of grazing livestock, disallowing game while you are in pilgrim sanctity. Indeed Allāh decrees whatever He desires)

yā-ʾayyuhā lladhīna ʾāmanū lā tuḥillū shaʿāʾira llāhi wa-lā sh-shahra l-ḥarāma wa-lā l-hadya wa-lā l-qalāʾida wa-lā ʾāmmīna l-bayta l-ḥarāma yabtaghūna faḍlan min rabbihim wa-riḍwānan wa-ʾidhā ḥalaltum fa-ṣṭādū wa-lā yajrimannakum shanaʾānu qawmin ʾan ṣaddūkum ʿani l-masjidi l-ḥarāmi ʾan taʿtadū wa-taʿāwanū ʿalā l-birri wa-t-taqwā wa-lā taʿāwanū ʿalā l-ʾithmi wa-l-ʿudwāni wa-ttaqū llāha ʾinna llāha shadīdu l-ʿiqābi“~ Sūrah Al – Ma’idāh 5:3

(O you who have faith! Do not violate Allāh’s sacraments, neither the sacred month, nor the offering, nor the necklaces, nor those bound for the Sacred House who seek their Lord’s grace and [His] pleasure. But when you emerge from pilgrim sanctity you may hunt for game. Ill feeling for a people should not lead you, because they barred you from [entering] the Sacred Mosque, to transgress. Cooperate in piety and Godwariness, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression, and be wary of Allāh. Indeed Allāh is severe in retribution.)

wa-lā taʾkulū mimmā lam yudhkari smu llāhi ʿalayhi wa-ʾinnahū la-fisqun wa-ʾinna sh-shayāṭīna la-yūḥūna ʾilā ʾawliyāʾihim li-yujādilūkum wa-ʾin ʾaṭaʿtumūhum ʾinnakum la-mushrikūna~ Sūrah Al – Anām 6:121

(Do not eat [anything] of that over which Allāh’s Name has not been mentioned, and that is indeed transgression. Indeed the satans inspire their friends to dispute with you; and if you obey them, you will indeed be polytheists)

The method of Zabaḥ is scientifically good:

  • Blood is drainedThe blood has to be drained completely before the head is removed. The purpose is to drain out most of the blood, which would serve as a good culture medium for micro organisms. The spinal cord must not be cut because the nerve fibres to the heart could be damaged during the process, causing cardiac arrest thereby stagnating the blood in the blood vessels.
  • Blood is a good medium for germs and bacteriaBlood is a good media of germs, bacteria, toxins, etc. Therefore, the Muslim way of slaughtering is more hygienic, as most of the blood containing germs, bacteria, toxins, etc. that are the cause of several diseases are eliminated.
  • Meat remains fresh for a longer timeMeat slaughtered in an Islāmic way remains fresh for a longer period of time due to the deficiency of blood in the meat as compared to other methods of slaughtering.

S
o brother and sisters in islām, please follow the practice of eating the meat which is slaughtered in the name of Allāh (ﷻ). If you are in party or restaurant, one should ask and enquire about it, and should not feel shame in it. When Allāh (ﷻ) directly says in Qur’ān and if we disobey HIM deliberately, then we should be ready to be punished. Those who have done it in the past, should repent  and should leave this habit of eating ḥarām meat.

indeed Allāh (ﷻ) is most merciful and oft returning. In shā Allāh brothers and sisters, just be steadfast.

When you learn something new and learn that is wrong, we should just accept it and avoid it.

Please spread this message of Islām and be steadfast in religion.

I pray that Allāh (ﷻ) guide us along the Straight Path, and protect from deviation after having guidance. And may Allāh (ﷻ) bless the leader of His Messengers, Muhammad (ﷺ), his family and his companions, and all who follow in their footsteps until the Final Hour, Āmīn.

Whatever written of Truth and benefit is only due to Allāh’s (ﷻ) Assistance and Guidance, and whatever of error is of me. Allāh (ﷻ) Alone Knows Best and He (ﷻ) is the Only Source of Strength.
